Bakersfield: The Heart of California
The city of Bakersfield is a relatively large Californian city, which is located equidistantly between Los Angeles and Fresno. In the late 18th century, Spanish missionaries explored the area, and gold was discovered in 1851 in the Kern River, attracting many settlers to the area. Thus, in 1863, the former California senator, Colonel Thomas Baker, was tasked to officially establish a town named Visalia. Colonel Baker worked on land reclamation and rerouted the water channel of the Kern River to prevent the regular flood that ran through the center of the town. During the founding ceremony in 1869, the grateful residents chose to name the town after the Colonel, and thus, Bakersfield was born.
